The Middlewood Tavern is an old building. It first appears to have become a tied house in 1900 when it formed part of the estate of Cockayne's Owlerton Brewery.
Cockayne's closed in 1914 and the pub changed hands several times. It was owned by Allsops of Burton, John Smiths and Rawsons during the interwar years
