Henry Tomlinson. Anchor Brewery. Cherry Street.

There was a time when Bramhall Lane Cricket Ground had a brewery at each end. It is said that the smell on match days inspired the Yorkshire team to greatness; they did afterall win The County Championship 6 times in the 1930.

As the 1930s came to an end so did Tomlinsons Brewery. An air raid in 1940 left it in ruins, the pubs were taken over by Hope & Anchor Brewery.

Brewing had commenced on the site in 1891, and Tomlinson's pubs were some of the most elaborately decorated in the city. The Ship on Shalesmore is still a superb example.

Much of the brewery still stands. It is now occupied by a timber yard. The outer wall still bears many distinctive features including the Anchor Brewery sign.
