Like the nearby Three Merry Lads, the Sportsman became a beer house to cash in on the navvies building the Redmires reservoirs. Later on it picked up trade from Redmires camp, which was an army training ground set up during World War 1. Many men will have had their last pint of British beer in the Sportsman before being sent to the trenches.
