Whitbread's opened the Shiny Sheff in 1969. The name refers to a series of naval ships known as HMS Sheffield. These ships were all affectionately known as the Shiny Sheff.
The pub itself maintains the naval theme inside. The rooms are known as Portsmouth and Plymouth, and are decked out with nautical memorabilia.
