Rutland Arms. 86 Brown Street

A gem of a pub, only flawed by being knocked into one room some years ago. It is odd to look round the original Gilmour's windows and find you are sat in several rooms at the same time.

It opened in 1833, and its classic Duncan Gilmour frontage is perhaps the finest remaining. Inside it is like an antique shop with a delightfully diverse collection of curios collected over years. A welcome change from the piles of bulk bought chinz heaped into many pubs when they undergo a makeover.

There is a beer garden to the rear

Excellent food and a good range of well kept beers are offered, and it is good to see the Rutland full at times when the surrounding cafe bars are deserted.

It can be difficult to get through the door when United are at home, but it is worth a try.
