The Royal Mail Inn stood close to the Greyhound on Sheffield Road. As the name suggests it was a coaching inn on the main Sheffield-London turnpike. This road crossed through the centre of what is now Graves Park.
The coming of the railways reduced the journey time to London from 27 hours to less than 10. This combined with the added comfort and security signaled the death of the mail coach.
The pub closed before the end of the 19th century, just as the railways brought their own influx of pubs further down the road.
