Built in 1790, when Charles Street would have been more accurately known as Alehouse Street, this old beer house remained largely unchanged until its closure in the early 1970s. Up until this point it was a beer only licence, and sold Ward's ales.
It was purchased by Sheffield Polytechnic who used it for a few years as a students social centre. This became surplus to requirements when facilities went in house, and Sheffield "Poly" became Sheffield Hallamshire University.
During the 1990s the pub re-emerged as the Newt & Chambers. Apparently £300,000 was spent. It did not last long and the name has changed yet again to the Emporium.
