The Brewery opened in the 1850s, and was one of a cluster in this area. They had been built to take advantage of a reliable and clean water supply, that was at the time rare in Sheffield. This area is riddled with springs.
It is said that the nearby George 1V was the brewery tap.
The brewery and its estate of public houses were taken over by John Smiths in 1914. The brewery was immediately closed although large parts survived until fairly recently.
