Original Grindstone. 26 Crookes

It may sound a strange story but for 100 years there were 2 pubs called the Grindstone at Crookes, and they stared at one another across the road. Stranger still is the fact that one was called the Original Grindstone, and yet it was far newer than the one opposite.

It is said that in around 1850 the landlady of the Old Grindstone fell out with the brewery and left the pub. In spite she set up a rival establishment directly across the road. This she called the Original Grindstone. It opened in 1854. At one stage the interloper adopted the name Old Original Grindstone.

The two pubs traded together until 1963 when road widening meant that the non-original, Original Grindstone was demolished.
