When opened it was known as the Manchester Railway Hotel. Being so close to the River Don, it is hardly surprising that it was badly affected by the Great Sheffield Flood in 1864, when the entire frontage of the pub was washed away.
The Manchester Hotel was a popular destination for gun club members who used a range in the nearby arches. It has recently lost its Ward's insignia, but still retains the etched glass.
