The Hen & Chickens is almost 200 years old, and was once one of several down this narrow alley. It is likely that the only time that its frontage has seen daylight was in 1898 when the buildings opposite were cleared for redevelopment.
It is very close to the old law courts and attracted a very mixed and colourful clientele.
