Hare & Hounds. Church Street Stannington

The original Hare & Hounds was sited on Uppergate Road. The current building dates from the mid 1960s, but it the original that has the most interesting history.

Dating from the 18th century, the pub was known as The Well Green or Well Green House. The name was changed to the Blue Boar, before becoming the Hare & Hounds around the time Victoria came to the throne.

Around the end of the 19th century it was aquired by John Smiths and was probably one of their first foot holds in the city before brewery takeovers established their presence.

It is however the events of the early 1960s that are best remembered. The landlord fell asleep whilst smoking his pipe and set himself on fire. He died from his injuries and the old pub was pulled down a few years later. It appears that smoking can seriously damage your health.
