Earl of Arundel and Surrey. 528 Queens Road

A large and imposing pub dating from the Victorian era. Its main claim to fame was as the stabling for Ward's dray horses. The stables are at the far left of the photograph. The horses in residence were painted on the wall and can just be seen.

Unfortunately Ward's has gone, and so have the horses. Another nail in the coffin of Sheffield's once proud brewing heritage.

One surprising fact about the Earl is that is a "pound house" and is required by Act of Parliament to take in stray animals at any time of day or night. I don't recommend turning up with a stray cat at 4 in the morning.
