Buccaneer. Leopold Street

It was a brave idea, and it worked for a time. The Buccaneer was built in the cellars of the 5 star Grand Hotel. It was aimed at the youth market and featured pirate themes, with ropes and fo'castles littered about the place.

The beer was never a strong point, and neither was ventilation. Smoke built up during the day until it was difficult to see let alone breathe. This was doubly difficult for the parrot which was perched there breathing the atmoshere daily. Students regularly poured beer into its water which can't have helped.

It was possible to gain access to the place through the front door of the Grand, before bolting down the back stairway and into the Buccanear. Scruffy students were not encouraged to do this.

The Grand Hotel closed and was demolished. There is now another bar using the old cellars.
