The Bird in Hand opened in 1861. It joined a growing cluster of pubs at the corner of Broughton Lane/Attercliffe Road.
It was once a small two roomed inn, with access to stables through an archway at the left hand end of the building. Local industry meant that it was a busy lunchtime pub.
This changed with the decline of the area and the pub closed in the late 1970s. It remained closed for a few years before reopening as a printers. It was then purchased by Carbrook Conservative Club and is once again serving beer.
