Big Tree, 842 Chesterfield Road

There is a certain irony in the name of this pub. It was originally named the Mason's Arms, but a large tree grew in front of the pub. Local knew the pub as "The Big Tree", and this was the name that the pub adopted in 1936. Unfortunately by this time the tree had gone. A circus elephant had been tethered to it and pulled it apart. A small sapling replaced it, and by the time this tree had any size, it too had died.

The pub became a diner several years ago, and the refurbishment revealed the masonic symbols inlaid into the floors. These are sadly once more covered with carpet. The fine carvings can still be seen on the gable ends on the outer walls.
