When the Barleycorn was built Cambridge Street was known as Coal Pit Lane. The pictur above shows the Barleycorn in 1905. It was then owned by Tennant Brothers but still bore the Don Brewery name.
Later on the pub was adorned with a bright yellow tiled frontage, and enjoyed a somewhat colourful clientel.
The bar was at least a foot higher than any other pub that I have ever visited. This did not stop the bar staff from vaulting over it at the first sign of trouble.
The Barleycorn has now disappeared. Cambridge Street will no longer be the same place.
