Now it seems that virtually every pub has a licence to serve meals, but 50 years ago you were lucky to find anything more than a pickled egg.
The Athol was one of the very few places where you could get meal late into the evening, something we now take for granted.
The athol closed 40 years ago, and has since had many new guises. It is currently an amusement arcade. Around the corner opposite Cole's car park can be seem a sign still saying Athol Hotel.
