An old coaching inn built on a minor cross roads, had the good fortune to find that new turnpike routes crossed outside its front door. The old Sheffield to Chesterfield road had previously passed up Derbyshire Lane before crossing what is now Graves Park. The new road through Totley to Owler Bar completed the transformation, and the Abbey became a popular stop for traders travelling to other markets.
Although the pub has received several extensions over the years, it still retains its bowling green behind the pub. Hopefully planning regulations will ensure that this situation remains.
Now a busy Tetley pub, in what has become a residential area.
