The Albert was built in 1797, when it was known as the Union. Its name was changed in honour of Prince Albert who married Queen Victoria in 1840. The City Hall was built directly opposite.
The Albert's history was entwined with Cambridge Street, or Coal Pit Lane as it was known at the time. The pit was infact a drift mine which ran from where Cambridge street meets the Mooor and directly beneath the Albert.
Throughout its life serious subsidence affected this Tennant's pub.It led to its closure in the 1980s, and when it became dangerous in 1988 it was demolished.
A new "cafe/bar" stands on the site. I hope they know about the pit.
